Christian Vision and Distinctiveness        ​​​

The 300-year Christian legacy of Mary Dean’s CE Primary School continues to shape the life of our school today. We are proud of our historical foundations and seek to bring this heritage into the present by responding to the needs of our modern school community. As a Church of England school, we are committed to nurturing and developing our Christian character in accordance with the principles and practices of the Church of England.

Our Christian vision, “Flow Together, Grow Together, Shine Together,” is rooted in the words of Psalm 1:3:

“That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season.”

The imagery of flowing water reflects our understanding of school as a community in which everyone is connected. Just as a river brings together many different streams, we believe that every member of our school family has a unique contribution to make. Through our relationships with one another and through God’s love, we seek to create an environment where everyone can flourish, grow in confidence and use their gifts to make a positive difference.

Our vision is lived out through our five Christian values of Respect, Kindness, Honesty, Service and Forgiveness. These values underpin the way we treat one another, the choices we make and the expectations we have for ourselves and others. They are not simply words displayed around school; we seek to embed them within our relationships, our curriculum, our worship and our everyday interactions.

Flow Together reflects our commitment to belonging, connection and community. We want every child, adult and family to feel valued, welcomed and included as part of our school family. We encourage children to respect themselves and others, recognising and celebrating the different gifts, experiences, faiths and beliefs within our community.

Grow Together reflects our belief that education is about the development of the whole person. We seek to nurture children academically, spiritually, socially, emotionally and morally. Through a broad, ambitious and personalised curriculum, children are encouraged to develop their knowledge, skills, character and understanding of the world around them. Our Christian values help children to reflect on how they can make positive choices and continue to grow as individuals.

Shine Together reflects our desire for every member of our community to recognise their God-given gifts and use them positively. We encourage our children to develop confidence, celebrate their achievements and support others. We want them to leave Mary Dean knowing that they have a valuable contribution to make and that they can make a difference in their families, school, community and wider world.

Our Christian vision therefore extends beyond academic achievement. We aim to provide children with the knowledge, experiences, relationships and values they need to flourish and approach their future with confidence. Our school family provides a sense of belonging, while the teachings and example of Jesus encourage us to live lives characterised by love, compassion, forgiveness, service and respect.

Collective Worship

Collective Worship is a statutory requirement for schools in England and is an important part of the distinctive Christian character of Mary Dean’s CE Primary School. Worship is a time when our school family comes together to flow together, grow together and shine together. It provides opportunities to meet, learn, reflect, pray and celebrate as a community.

Our worship is rooted in the Bible and the Christian story and reflects the Anglican tradition and the rhythm of the Church year. Worship is led by teachers, members of the clergy, Open the Book and our children. Christian values and spirituality are explored through Bible stories, teachings, music, discussion, prayer and opportunities for reflection. Worship also provides opportunities to consider how Christian teaching connects with our lives and with the wider world.

Our weekly whole-school worship led by the Headteacher follows God’s Big Story Worship, with themes and Bible stories developed throughout the week. This is supported by the use of the Big Frieze, enabling children to revisit and make connections between key Bible stories. Links are also made with the Understanding Christianity programme so that children encounter Christian concepts through both worship and their Religious Education lessons.

Our clergy and Open the Book team regularly lead worship, bringing the Bible to life through drama and storytelling. Each class also leads worship during the year, based on an appropriate Bible story, Christian teaching or theme. This provides children with opportunities to take an active role in sharing their learning, gifts and understanding with the wider school community.

The Church of England's calendar is an important part of our worship. We celebrate and explore significant Christian festivals including Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter and Pentecost. Children have opportunities to visit St Mary’s Church, enabling them to experience worship within the wider church community and deepen their understanding of Christian traditions and practices.

Prayer is an integral part of our worship and school life. Children are encouraged to reflect, be still and consider their own thoughts, feelings and responses. We seek to make prayer invitational, providing opportunities for children and adults to engage in ways that are appropriate to their own beliefs and understanding.

Children as Active Participants

Our children play an important role in developing the Christian character of Mary Dean. The Worship Warriors have helped children across the school to explore what Christianity means within our school community and how our vision and values can be expressed through everyday actions.

Children have read Bible stories, developed activities for younger children around Christian festivals and helped to identify Bible stories that connect with our Christian values.

This involvement reflects our belief that Christian distinctiveness should not simply be something that adults provide for children. Children are active participants in the spiritual life of our school and are encouraged to contribute their ideas, gifts and experiences. Through this, they help our whole community to flow together, grow together and shine together.

Christian Values in Action

Our five Christian values provide a common language for our school community:

• Respect – recognising the dignity and worth of ourselves, others and God's creation.
• Kindness – showing love, compassion and care towards others.
• Honesty – being truthful, trustworthy and willing to take responsibility for our choices.
• Service – using our gifts to help and support others and to make a positive difference.
• Forgiveness – recognising that people make mistakes, seeking reconciliation and offering opportunities for new beginnings.

These values are explored through worship, Religious Education, the wider curriculum and everyday relationships. They provide opportunities for children to consider how Christian teaching can influence their choices and actions.

Our school rules of Ready, Respectful and Safe support these values by giving children clear expectations for how we live and learn together. The rules and values complement one another: they help children understand not only what is expected of them, but why our relationships and behaviour matter.

Flourishing as a School Family

Mary Dean is also part of the First Federation Trust, whose values of Aspire, Flourish and Achieve complement our Christian vision. We recognise that children develop and make progress when they are known, valued and supported within strong relationships.

Our Christian vision places particular emphasis on flourishing together. We seek to nurture each individual while also developing a strong sense of belonging to our school family. Through positive relationships, encouragement and appropriate support, children are enabled to develop confidence and resilience.

We want every child to have the opportunity to discover their strengths, develop their talents and aspire to make the most of their opportunities. Our broad and ambitious curriculum provides the knowledge, experiences and skills they need to pursue their goals, while our Christian vision reminds us that achievement is only one part of a flourishing life.

Ultimately, our aim is for everyone within the Mary Dean community to recognise that they have a place within our shared journey: flowing together as a community, growing together in knowledge, character and faith, and shining together by using our gifts to make a positive difference in the world.
